Assurance of Peace

“These things I have spoken to you, that in Me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation; but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world.”
John 16:33

What do you remember about the holidays? Is it time with family? Is it the gifts? Is it the food? Is it service to others? Is it sadness? Is it loneliness? Is it turmoil?

We all experience different emotions during the holiday season. I have always enjoyed Thanksgiving. When I was a kid, we were constantly around family. We had giant feasts. We played football in the yard. Thanksgiving was such a wonderful time to visit and relax. For many years, I would say that my memories of Thanksgiving were all happy and encouraging.

One week before I celebrated my twenty-fifth Thanksgiving, my father died. The memory of that week changed my feelings associated with the great holiday. I remember sadness and longing to have my dad with us to celebrate. I experience many emotions now when I think of Thanksgiving, some are happy and some are sad. Some memories are good and some are bad. We take our memories and emotions and associate them with days and times, with places and circumstances. God cares about us so much that He does not want us to live in the past. He gives us assurance of the future.

There is one sure thing that I can associate with every memory of that Thanksgiving. That thing is peace. In John 16, our Savior is explaining to His closest friends that He will leave them and that He will die. Of course the disciples were sad, scared, and troubled by Christ’s words. The disciples could associate their holiday of Passover with the death of their friend. They, like us, experienced trouble in this world. But Jesus told them to be happy, because He has already overcome the world.

In John 16:33, Jesus said that peace is found in Him. Are you hurting during the holidays? You can have peace, and the peace that you desire is found IN Jesus Christ.

Heavenly Father, I know that I will have trouble in this world. I know that I will face struggles and loss. God, help me to be of good cheer and turn to Jesus Christ, Your Son, so that I can experience the peace that only You can give me. Thank You for loving me so much that You would send me Peace in the form of Jesus. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.
