“Behold, the virgin shall be with child, and bear a Son, and they shall call His name Immanuel, which is translated, God with us.”
Matthew 1:23

Today is Christmas! Leading up to this day has been the craziness of buying countless gifts, preparing wonderful food, and now the day has finally arrived! You have probably already opened the gifts with your children under the tree, or maybe you are just taking in your first cup of coffee. Wherever you are, I want you to STOP, LISTEN, and allow the Savior to take the moment. One of my favorite verses is when God tells us:

“Be still, and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth!”
Psalm 46:10

My kids are so excited to open up their gifts. For weeks they have told me, “I can’t wait to open up my presents!” Often, I have had to remind them what Christmas is really about. It is so easy to lose our focus, but today I want to encourage you to make it the main event!

So what should we say to our family today? Let’s just tell them the Christmas story!

Today is a day that we have celebrated for 2000 years. This is when we look back to the time when God Himself came as a newborn child to dwell among us. This was the time when He left the throne room where thousands and thousands of angels were worshipping Him daily, to be born into the poorest of conditions. You see, God’s redemptive plan had to be fulfilled, and He chose to come to our level, so He could save the world!

It all begins with the angel of the Lord coming to Mary to tell her that God had chosen her to carry a child.

“Then the angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God. And behold, you will conceive in your womb and bring forth a Son, and shall call His name Jesus.”
Luke 1:30-31

What great faith Mary had to receive what the angel of the Lord was telling her, and to do what God was asking her to do! No matter what other people thought, or what other people would say, Mary was determined to carry out God’s plan.

We should have faith like Mary’s! We should be secure in the knowledge that God has a plan for all of us that we are to carry out His purposes at home, at school, and in our jobs. We should have faith so great that nothing would deter us from fulfilling the plan of God!

Nine months later, it was time for Mary to give birth to this baby that God had given.

“So it was, that while they were there, the days were completed for her to be delivered. And she brought forth her firstborn Son, and wrapped Him in swaddling cloths, and laid Him in a manger, because there was no room for them in the inn.”
Luke 2:6-7

Christ was born!! The long awaited Messiah, Immanuel had finally arrived!

Today, don’t let your busyness take the place of what God wants you to hear. Be still, and allow Him to take precedence over everything you do today. Explain to your family, your children, and your friends the importance of slowing down on this very special day in order to EXALT His name!

Merry Christmas!!

Heavenly Father, allow us to focus on Your plan for our lives. Help us to be purposeful in following your plan for our lives. We want to exalt Your name! In Jesus’ name I pray, Amen.
