Agape Love

“But the fruit of the Spirit is love…”
Galatians 5:22

We are limited by our English language to only one word for love. However, in the Greek, there are several distinctions for love that all are given their own individual word. God’s love is the highest form of the words for love and is called “agape”. Agape love is a fruit produced by the Holy Spirit that lives inside of each believer.

Having established this basic truth, let me ask you a question. Is the Holy Spirit producing the fruit of agape love in your life? This may be a new concept for you. Many of us try and try to be loving, but fail so often. The problem is that we are trying to produce what our flesh cannot produce. We are not capable of bearing this kind of fruit. It is God’s fruit.

This leaves us in a dilemma. God has given us the answer, and it is something that you can begin to use immediately. In fact, He is just waiting for you to begin. Are you ready?

First, let’s look at how you can identify agape love in a person’s life. Take Jesus’ life for an example. He showed us agape love by going out of His way to win a Samaritan woman. He gave Himself to the disciples as He taught them – even unto the cross. He miraculously reattached the severed ear of a Roman soldier. He washed the disciples’ feet, fed thousands, showed compassion on the hurting, and never turned anyone away. He left the splendor of Heaven to come down to where we are in order to take us to where He is. The list goes on and on!

Yes, we have the potential for this agape love in us, but it is not activated until we ask Jesus to enable us to use His love and shine through us to others. Your flesh may want to rebel against this kind of love. Look at this verse for today:

“Now hope does not disappoint, because the love (agape) of God has been poured out in our hearts by the Holy Spirit who was given to us.”
Romans 5:5

Paul told Timothy to exercise himself to godliness (1 Timothy 4:7-8). Here is an exercise for you. First, acknowledge that you have not been using God’s agape love and that you want the Holy Spirit to help guide you to use agape love today. Listen when He speaks to you and love as He would love. Let Him use your life today. Ask for opportunities to show agape love to others. You will be surprised by what happens. He is patiently waiting for you to make the first move.

“But God demonstrates His own love (agape) toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.”
Romans 5:8

Go demonstrate (meaning: show) your love (agape) to others!

Lord Jesus, I ask You to forgive me for not allowing Your love to flow through me to others. I can see Your love in my daily life, and yet so often I do not acknowledge You’re watching over me. I see Your love as I look at creation and how amazing the universe operates day in and day out – even when we are unthankful to You. Your love is beyond our minds to comprehend. Father, I ask you to allow Your agape love that You have given us to flow through me to others today. Help me to encounter people that need to see God in my life today. I praise you for what you are going to do in my life today. I ask this is Jesus’ name and with thanksgiving. Amen.
